After nearly 2,400 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured during stone-throwing incidents in the Valley last year, the security force has decided to provide 20,000 full-body protectors and 3,000 poly-carbonate protectors to its troops.
The made-in-India full body protectors will help CRPF personnel in countering stone-throwing and other minor attacks.
Such body protector suits have been used in the past by the US armed forces. “Similarly, our soldiers will, too, be equipped with these, making handling of agitated crowds easier,” said Atul Karwal, IG, Training, CRPF.
He said, “The soldier will sweat a little after wearing these body protectors because of the weight, which is around 5 kg, but keeping in mind their safety, the body protector’s weight doesn’t matter.”
With intelligence sources saying that infiltration and agitation was expected to increase in the coming days, problem in maintaining law and order situation may arise in the Valley. However, the body protectors will come as a great aid to the personnel.
At present, nearly 70,000 CRPF men are deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.
A soldier deployed in Pulwama district, who had come to Delhi on a brief vacation, said, “These body protectors will protect us from any type of stone-throwing and other small attacks which agitators attempt. After wearing these protectors, our self-confidence in tackling the agitators will get a boost.”
